Atomic coherence induced Kerr nonlinearity enhancement in Rb vapour

چکیده
The Kerr nonlinear index of refraction for rubidium atoms is measured by using an optical ring cavity with and without electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Significant enhancement and inhibition of the Kerr nonlinear index is observed near resonance with EIT. The nonlinear index of refraction is measured as functions of probe and coupling frequency detunings, respectively, with and without the presence of EIT. A simple theoretical calculation including Doppler broadening is presented and is found to be in good qualitative agreement with the experimentally measured results.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation of elliptically polarized light
We predict theoretically and demonstrate experimentally an ellipticity-dependent nonlinear magneto-optic rotation of elliptically polarized light propagating in a medium with atomic coherence. We show that this effect results from hexadecapole and higher-order moments of the atomic coherence, and is associated with an enhancement of Kerr and higher-order nonlinearities accompanied by suppressio...
متن کاملNoise-induced switching via fluctuating atomic coherence in an optical three-level bistable system
Noise-induced switching caused by fluctuating atomic coherence is experimentally demonstrated in an atomic optical bistable system consisting of three-level atoms in -type configurations confined in an optical ring cavity. The nonlinear phase as a result of enhanced Kerr nonlinearity induced by atomic coherence in the electromagnetically induced transparency system is fluctuating due to the noi...
متن کاملNanoscale Kerr Nonlinearity Enhancement Using Spontaneously Generated Coherence in Plasmonic Nanocavity
The enhancement of the optical nonlinear effects at nanoscale is important in the on-chip optical information processing. We theoretically propose the mechanism of the great Kerr nonlinearity enhancement by using anisotropic Purcell factors in a double-Λ type four-level system, i.e., if the bisector of the two vertical dipole moments lies in the small/large Purcell factor axis in the space, the...
متن کاملEnhanced Kerr nonlinearity via atomic coherence in a three-level atomic system.
We measure the Kerr-nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level Lambda-type atomic system inside an optical ring cavity. The Kerr nonlinearity is modified and greatly enhanced near atomic resonant conditions for both probe and coupling beams. The Kerr nonlinear coefficient n(2) changes sign when the coupling beam frequency detuning switches sign, which can lead to interesting applications in...
متن کاملInteracting dark states with enhanced nonlinearity in an ideal four-level tripod atomic system
We present an experimental system to generate large cross-phase modulation XPM in cold rubidium atoms. By using an efficient state-preparation technique in the Rb D1 line, an ideal four-level tripod-type atomic system is formed, which generates large cross-Kerr nonlinearity via interacting dark states in this system. The induced phase shift due to XPM for the probe beam is measured for differen...
